Reduce Waste This Fall! The CityLiving Team is constantly striving to be green. Here are some tips for reducing waste around the house this Fall straight from the Environmental Protection Agency.
Compost is a rich, organic soil conditioner for your lawn and garden. Put raked leaves and other yard wastes in a compost bin and keep these materials out of landfills. You can also add organic materials cleaned out of your gutters! If you don’t have a compost pile at home, you can drop off your organic waste to a few sites around town, such as the Community Gardens at 1001 Gale Lane. Check out www.nashville.gov/community_gardens for more info.
Clean and properly store tools, toys, and outdoor furniture to protect them from damage during the Fall & Winter, allowing you to keep them longer instead of sending them to the landfill.
Instead of purchasing a costume you will probably only wear once and throw away, use old clothes or buy used clothes from a consignment shop to make your costume. Remember to use reusable cloth bags instead of disposable ones for trick-or-treating.
Jack O’ Lanterns
Make the most of your Jack O’ Lantern. Use the removed meat to make pumpkin pie or muffins and roast the seeds for a snack. When the holiday is over, cut up your carved pumpkin before it spoils and toss it in the compost bin.
